The Philadelphia Phillies are coming off a season marked by a thrilling playoff run, with standout performances from key players, including their star catcher, J.T. Realmuto. Known as one of the most well-rounded catchers in baseball, Realmuto’s athleticism, strong arm, and batting ability have made him an invaluable asset for the Phillies. However, as he enters his 10th MLB season, the Phillies must develop a strategy that maximizes his contributions without overextending his workload
One of the top priorities for the Phillies should be managing Realmuto’s playing time. Catchers endure the most physical demands on the field, with a season-long grind that can wear down even the most resilient players. Last season, Realmuto played in 136 games, which is high for a catcher. This year, strategically balancing his schedule could reduce fatigue and help maintain his top form, especially during the playoffs. Giving Realmuto more days off or shifting him into a designated hitter (DH) role on occasion would keep his bat in the lineup without compromising his stamina.
Introducing a capable backup catcher is also key. The Phillies have Garrett Stubbs as a backup, but enhancing this role would allow Realmuto to rest more consistently without sacrificing defensive quality. Ideally, this backup should be able to handle at least 50-60 games behind the plate, allowing Realmuto to focus on his offensive contributions and preserve his defensive energy for critical moments. By preserving Realmuto’s physical condition through rest and DH stints, the Phillies could extend his defensive impact over a full season, potentially sparking another run at the division title.
Finally, the Phillies should consider optimizing Realmuto’s batting position. While he’s consistently produced in the middle of the order, a move up or down could reduce pressure in situations when his power is most needed. With Bryce Harper and Trea Turner already anchoring the lineup, tweaking Realmuto’s spot could unlock even more run production.
