In the same game, catchers play for both teams.
Being the first player to play for both teams in the same Major League Baseball game, Danny Jansen is a catcher.
Yes, you read correctly.
On June 26, rain caused the Toronto Blue Jays’ game against the Boston Red Sox to be suspended when the 29-year-old was batting for them.
On July 27, Jansen was dealt to the Red Sox, and on Monday, when play resumed, he made his debut for his new team.
Jansen stated, “I’m just going to put my head down and play,” before to the game’s restart. “It’s definitely a cool thing.”
In the past, MLB has seen new additions in the middle of banned games, but there has never been a situation when a player played against his former team.
Surprisingly, Jansen was the Blue Jays’ batter at the plate when play was suspended two months ago.
This meant that Jansen, now wearing a Red Sox uniform instead of a Toronto one, was the host team’s catcher at Boston’s Fenway Park, forcing his old team to field pinch hitter Daulton Varsho in his place.Jansen was in both teams’ starting lineups and box scores as the Blue Jays prevailed 4-1.
He described the circumstances as “strange” to MLB.com after the game, saying, “Given the history of the situation, I never would have imagined myself in this situation.” I suppose I would have expected it to have occurred previously.”
