TEAMtalk reports that Rangers have ‘zero interest’ in selling Jack Butland, putting an end to Birmingham City’s pursuit of the goalkeeper.
Since Wayne Rooney’s appointment, Birmingham City has been connected with a slew of players. The club’s contentious decision to replace the incumbent John Eustace with Rooney has sparked much speculation, and one guy who has been linked is goalkeeper Butland.
The Rangers midfielder, 30, is a former England teammate of Rooney’s and began his career with the Blues. Butland came through the club’s system and played 46 times before joining Stoke City.
Their early expectations have been dashed, however, following rumors of Rooney’s wish to bring Butland back to St. Andrew’s.
According to TEAMtalk, the Rangers have ‘zero interest’ in selling Butland this winter. As a result, it would take a’sensational offer’ for them to consider selling him, leaving Birmingham City manager Rooney extremely dissatisfied.
Butland is under contract with the Rangers until 2027, and given that he only signed in the summer, it’s not surprising that the club isn’t interested in his services. He’s also been a regular since his arrival, with seven clean sheets in 16 appearances.
Birmingham City, on the other hand, may be looking for a new goalkeeper this winter, so Rooney and company may have to look elsewhere.
As things stand, the Blues’ goalkeepers are John Ruddy and Neil Etheridge. They are 36 and 33 years old, therefore Rooney may be looking for a longer-term solution this winter.
Birmingham City will be busy identifying targets for the January transfer window in the coming months, so with this latest development regarding Rangers’ position, the Championship club may shift their focus to other goalkeeping possibilities.
