The standout player in Philadelphia Eagles training camp was recently retired.
Predicting the Philadelphia Eagles training camp standouts for the summer was not too difficult.
John Ross was not among the many names that immediately sprang to mind.
Ross, freshly out of retirement since November of 2023, joined the Eagles in May following a tryout and has utilized the early half of training camp to remind spectators when he was the ninth overall choice by Cincinnati in 2017.
The way that Ross has appeared in drills or even while working with Jalen Hurts and the starting offense has been the subject of nearly every training camp report and social media observation. Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice provides a recent, excellent example: “Hurts threw toward the sideline to John Ross, who went WAY up to make the grab, on a rep in which Hurts was sacked but the play continued anyway.”
Parris Campbell and Ross have been switching places as the offense’s third wideout behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. He is considerably ahead of youngsters Johnny Wilson and Ainias Smith thus far.
Ross clearly has some explosive speed and variety to bring to the Hurts-led offense, even if he doesn’t secure the third spot on the depth chart by the start of the season. Not bad for a player who recently came out of retirement and hasn’t had a regular season pass since 2021, thus far.
