Philadelphia Phillies Are Supposedly Considering a Groundbreaking Change for Starting Pitching.
The Philadelphia Phillies don’t appear to have ruled out signing a starter for the second half of the season and the postseason.
The Philadelphia Phillies intend to be a competitive team until the July 30 trade deadline. They will try to cover as many of the roster gaps as they can because this team is obviously a contender to win the World Series.
Dave Dombrowski and his executive team have long been believed to be interested in bullpen and outfield help.
It’s unclear what kind of profile they have in mind for the extra lineup component. There have been rumors that they will attempt to arrange a major trade for a high-profile slugger like as Cody Bellinger or Luis Robert Jr. Others indicate that by adding a player who feels at ease in a platoon split versus left-handed pitchers, they are searching for the ideal fit.
Contending clubs will always be interested in relievers, and the Phillies need to add a few more shutdown arms given their bullpen ERA has skyrocketed to 3.91, good for 16th in the league.
Dombrowski has a history of taking bold action when he believes his club can win a championship, so it wouldn’t be shocking if he signed some of the top candidates to deal with these two issues.
Philadelphia’s excellent rotation—whose 3.20 ERA leads all major league teams—is one of their advantages.
Since Taijuan Walker and Spencer Turnbull are scheduled to return off the disabled list at some point in the second half of the season, it was believed that they may avoid the need to bring in another starting arm because of their strength.
But according to MLB insider Jon Morosi, the Phillies are reportedly considering Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox and Jack Flaherty of the Detroit Tigers in particular as two guys to bolster their rotation.
That is really shocking.
Since Crochet might be the best starting pitcher available at the deadline, landing him would be a significant move for Philadelphia. In exchange for sending their ace, who leads the AL with 157 strikeouts and a 3.07 ERA, the White Sox are reportedly demanding a sizable haul.
It would be a blockbuster to close this deal.
They would have to send out a package comprising Aidan Miller, Justin Crawford, and Andrew Painter, along with other top prospects. Perhaps Crochet can be acquired along with Robert to make the trade of so many excellent minor leaguers seem like a good deal.
If the Phillies choose to go that way, Flaherty would be far less expensive.
With him set to become a free agent at the end of the season, he would be a rental, allowing them to keep their top prospects while acquiring a starter with a 3.13 ERA and 11.4 K/9 ratio.
Still, this is an unexpected report.
Although it was assumed Philadelphia wouldn’t be interested in starting pitching, Dombrowski and his front office are considering all possibilities in order to guarantee this team can win the World Series, according to information provided by Morosi.
