Austin Riley of the Braves signs a 10-year, $212 million contract extension, making it the biggest deal in team history.
The highest contract in the history of the Atlanta Braves was signed by third baseman Austin Riley to a 10-year, $212 million contract extension on Monday. The deal contains a $20 million option for the 2033 season, with the guaranteed component expiring after the 2032 season. Riley will receive $15 million for the 2023 season, $21 million for 2024, and $22 million per season from 2025 through 2032 under the terms of the contract, which starts next season. The three arbitration years and seven free-agent seasons are covered by the contract, which will expire at least when Riley turns 36.
Riley, 25, is having a fantastic 2022 campaign. With 29 home runs and 31 doubles in 101 games, he had a slash line of.301/.360/.604 (161 OPS+) coming into Monday’s slate. He appeared in his first professional All-Star game earlier this season. Riley also just wrapped up a successful 2021 season in which he hit 33 home runs, took home the Silver Slugger, and was voted seventh in the National League MVP race. Riley’s lifetime OPS+ is 125, earned in portions of four major league seasons. He was selected by the Braves with the 41st overall choice in 2015, coming out of Mississippi’s DeSoto Central High School.
Riley now joins Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies, and Matt Olson as young to young-ish Braves position players who are all under contract potentially through at least 2027.
Riley and the defending champion Braves are currently only three games behind the New York Mets in the NL East rankings and comfortably in position to make the playoffs. Following two below-average months to start the season, the Braves have gone 39-14 since June 1.
