In Atlanta Braves history, Marcell Ozuna leaves his mark.
With the Atlanta Braves, Marcell Ozuna has been on an incredible run that broke previous records. Marcell Ozuna, an outfielder for the Atlanta Braves, worked out prior to Friday night’s Home Run Derby against the San Diego Padres. The Braves defeated the San Diego Padres 6-1 thanks to his two solo home runs. With that first home run, though, Ozuna also created history. As a result, he achieved RBI number 76 prior to the All-Star Break, creating a record for the Atlanta era. Just two Braves players, including Ozuna, had at least 75 RBI prior to the break. Andruw Jones is the other one.
Ozuna has two games remaining before the All-Star Break with 77 RBIs, including 26 home runs. He is one of three players in MLB this season to have scored 75 runs at bat in the official first half. Alongside him are Jose Ramirez (77) and Aaron Judge (84). Before the break, Ozuna and Judge were the only two players since 2020 to have at least 25 home runs and 75 RBI. Additional Historical Notes Since 1966, Ozuna’s record has been the record for the Atlanta era. Ozuna is only one of two players in Braves history with more than 75 RBIs. In 1960, Eddie Matthews amassed 80 runs batted in while playing for the Milwaukee Braves.
Not a bad business. How near is Ozuna to the MLB record, given all the discussion about team records? Still quite a ways off. Despite his remarkable 75 RBI before the All-Star Break, he is not even close to breaking the MLB record. The record, set in 1935 by Hank Greenberg, of the Baseball Hall of Fame, is 103. With 101 RBI before the break in 1998, Juan Gonzalez became the second player to reach 100 RBI. Not surprisingly, in their respective seasons, both players were chosen the MVP of the American League.narrative Notes Since 1966, Ozuna’s record has been the record for the Atlanta era. Ozuna is certainly making a strong case for the National League MVP honor – even with out a league record and having a tough opponent in Shohei Ohtani. These are the types of numbers that should him at least a finalist for the award.
