The second-fastest pitcher in franchise history to reach this milestone is the Phillies’ Ace.
Zack Wheeler, the ace of the Philadelphia Phillies, joined an exceedingly exclusive company in team history on Tuesday night by throwing a gem against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tuesday night’s victory by the Philadelphia Phillies over the Los Angeles Dodgers saw starting pitcher Zack Wheeler joining some very distinguished company in the team’s record books. With the victory, Wheeler improved to 10-4 after pitching 5.0 innings and giving up just one earned run. He got two walks and seven strikeouts. With the effort, he notched his 800th career strikeout (with the organization) and now has a 2.70 ERA for the year.
Currently in his 120th Phillies start, he is officially the second fastest player to reach 800 strikeouts. Only Cliff Lee (115 games) accomplished the feat more quickly. For a Phillies club that intends to win the World Series this year, 34-year-old Wheeler is still at the peak of his game. They’ve gone to the NLCS and World Series in the past, but they were unsuccessful. However, Wheeler had lower back tightness as he left the game, so that is something to keep an eye on.
Wheeler has played in the major levels for ten seasons now, despite missing all of 2014–2016 due to injury. His career record with the Phillies and New York Mets is 97-67 with a 3.39 ERA. At this point, he has seven different seasons with double-digit victories. At 59-32, the Phillies lead the NL.
