Making WNBA history in the most recent Indiana Fever game, Caitlin Clark’s reaction was the best.
In the WNBA, Caitlin Clark is still making history, but her most recent record may be the most thrilling of the year.
The 22-year-old basketball player made history on July 6th when he became the first rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double. He was also the first player from the Indiana Fever to accomplish the feat in general. In case you’re unaware, a player can get a triple-double when they achieve double-digit numbers in three out of the five categories: steals, assists, blocks, points, and rebounds.
In the first half of their match against the New York Liberty, the Indiana Fever came out firing, but they trailed briefly in the second. But Clark went on a tremendous run, finishing with 15 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds for a triple-double—and the game wasn’t even over yet.
Following his near triple-double in the Fever’s most recent game against the Phoenix Mercury, fans at the crowded Gainbridge Fieldhouse venue were ready for this historic occasion, giving Clark a standing ovation right away. At the conclusion of the match, the Fever defeated the Liberty (83-78). Caitlin finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists.
After the game, Clark gave a cheerful wave and indicated her mood with a “W” hand motion. “Here we have another one,” she remarked, mentioning the supporters in between. They weren’t real. Through the fourth quarter, they managed to get us there. pleased for our team. That is a significant one. You must continue stacking them.
Her teammates were ecstatic for Clark as well, showing their joy by dousing the point guard with water. The guard responded by slathering Fever coach Christie Sides in water.
Though her fan base will get to see Clark play against Team USA in this year’s WNBA All-Star Game, the recent decision to leave Clark off his year’s Olympic team prompted a heated controversy among WNBA viewers. Along with record-breaking rookie Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky and colleagues Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell of the Fever, Clark will be a member of Team WNBA. The remainder of the lineup is viewable here.
Fans’ votes choose the WNBA team in part, but they are not the primary consideration. With 700,735 votes, Clark received the most votes of any player. With 618,680 votes, Boston took second place, and Reese—who now leads the league in double-doubles—got 381,518 votes.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been her teammate before, even with USA Basketball or anything like that,” Clark said of her upcoming team-up with Reese. “I know people are going to be really excited about it, but I hope it doesn’t take away from everybody else. This is a huge accomplishment for everybody on Team USA and everybody on Team WNBA. They all deserve the same praise.”
The All-Star team will play Team USA on July 20 in Phoenix, Arizona. Team USA, of course, is stacked with renowned vets, including A’Ja Wilson, Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and NY Liberty players Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart. While the game is already sold out, you can watch it all go down on ABC at 8:30 PM EST.
