When Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese were paired for the All-Star Game, she revealed her candid reaction.
Following her nomination as a WNBA All-Star, Caitlin Clark, a star for the Indiana Fever, sent a letter to her supporters that was all too humble.
It came as no surprise when Clark, who received 700,735 votes from fans to finish top in the fan poll, was selected for the first time in her career to the WNBA All-Star squad. Angel Reese, a rookie who just finished his record-breaking 11th double-double for the Chicago Sky, will be joining her.
For the first time since 2014, two rookies have been chosen WNBA All-Stars in the same season with Clark and Reese’s choices.
In addition to ensuring that the other members of Team WNBA received their bouquets, Clark talked about the unique experience of working with her collegiate adversary.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been her teammate before, even with USA Basketball or anything like that,” Clark said on Tuesday. “So, I know people are going to be really excited about it, but I hope it doesn’t take away from everybody else.”
Clark continued, “This is a huge accomplishment for everybody on Team USA and everybody on Team WNBA. They all deserve the same praise. I don’t want it to take away from any of that and just be the focal point of All-Star weekend because that’s not fair to them. Honestly, this is something that’s really hard to accomplish … Just going to soak in the experience ‘ cause you never know if you’re ever going to get back there and it’ll be fun for all of us.”
The history of Clark and Reese on the court goes back to their college years, when Reese played for LSU and Maryland and Clark played for Iowa. Reese’s victory over Clark in the 2023 national championship game is particularly memorable. Three times this season, the two WNBA rookie sensations have faced off, with Clark’s Fever winning the series 2-1. Reese leads the league in rebounds per game (11.4), while Clark leads WNBA rookies with 16.0 points and 7.1 assists.
Two-time All-Star Aliyah Boston, four-time All-Star Arike Ogunbowale, and nine-time All-Star Nneka Ogwumike are among the twelve women who make up Team WNBA in addition to Clark and Reese. As a point of reference, the WNBA All-Star selection method consists of three components: a national panel of broadcasters and sportswriters (25%), current WNBA players (25%) and fan voting (50%).
The United States women’s Olympic basketball team, Team USA, will play Team WNBA in the 2024 All-Star Game in Phoenix on July 20.
