Before the Olympics, Caitlin Clark suffers yet another letdown from USA Basketball.
Caitlin Clark’s “snub” from the national team chosen to vie for gold in the Summer Olympics in Paris this year has received a lot of attention. Clark was not only left off of the 12-player roster for the Games in July, but she was also not chosen for the Olympic 3-on-3 women’s squad, which fellow rookie Cameron Brink was selected for.
But Brink’s recent knee injury altered the situation, and on the smaller 3-on-3 roster, she needed a substitute. Although many people immediately mentioned Clark as the perfect alternative, the truth is far different.
A single Spark takes the place of several
One of Brink’s Los Angeles Sparks teammates was selected for the 3×3 team despite Clark’s failure to meet eligibility rules.
Dearica Hamby will take Brink’s spot on the 3×3 team, USA Basketball said on Monday. After fulfilling FIBA’s eligibility requirements, Hamby is having a fantastic season with the rebuilding Sparks in Los Angeles.
Despite the fact that Clark would have qualified for the 3×3 squad if FIBA standards had been reached, Hamby is a more suitable replacement for Brink and improves the US’s chances of winning another gold medal. Hamby is one of four WNBA players this season averaging a double-double per game.
Clark will keep waiting and working in the interim in the hopes of qualifying for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in the summer of 2028.
