Philadelphia Phillies Might Be able to acquire the World Series Champion.
If one of the all-time great closers becomes available, the Philadelphia Phillies might try to enhance their bullpen with him.
Before the Philadelphia Phillies’ game in London on Saturday against the New York Mets, who are their division rivals, it seemed like an eternity had passed.
After the Phillies’ lopsided victory in Game 1 of the international series and Bryce Harper’s creation of yet another viral moment, there was much to rejoice.
The aircraft travel home won’t be quite as enjoyable as it could be, though, because they disappointingly lost the second contest. In the top of the ninth inning, the Mets pulled together to score three runs, taking a 6-4 lead that they would eventually hold for a 6-5 victory.
Jose Alvarado was called upon by Philadelphia to finish the game with a one-run lead.
Over the years, this team has relied heavily on the big lefty out of the bullpen, but on Sunday, he blew his second save of the year.
One loss isn’t the end of the world, but it does highlight there are still weaknesses on this roster that the front office can look to upgrade around the trade deadline to ensure they have the best possible shot at winning the World Series.
As all Phillies fans know, bullpen is their biggest concern.
One of the best relievers of all time could become available and Philadelphia should look to acquire him to mitigate some of these issues.
Although Jon Heyman of The New York Post rates the Boston Red Sox’s chances of trading future Hall of Famer Kenley Jansen before July 30 as “average,” that could change given that the team is currently 12.5 games out of first place in their division and out of the postseason picture.
With Craig Kimbrel leaving in free agency, the Phillies were frequently mentioned as a potential suitor, and the Red Sox were shopping the veteran closer throughout the summer.
Even if nothing was accomplished in the end, Dave Dombrowski is still involved.
Jansen was chosen for another All-Star Game in 2023, and he was only two years removed from leading the National League in saves.
In addition to providing Philadelphia with greater backend security, he would enable manager Rob Thomson to use Alvarado in high-leverage situations whenever necessary to get the team out of a tight spot—something he has done in the past and would like to keep doing.
Everything about Jansen’s potential availability is contingent upon Boston’s performance over the course of the next month and a half.
Despite being out of their divisional race, they sat just 1.5 back of the final Wild Card spot entering Sunday, meaning they would probably look to buy instead of sell if they think they can earn a spot in the playoffs.
This will be something to monitor going forward as bullpen arms are always going to be a need for the Phillies.
