Phillies of Philadelphia Watching Scranton Native During Trade Deadline.
Before making a postseason push, the Philadelphia Phillies will probably look for an opportunity to improve their outfield situation.
As the trade deadline in late July draws near, the Philadelphia Phillies appear to need some assistance in the outfield.
It’s debatable who exactly they might target.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies are apparently keeping a watch on an outfielder that they are familiar with for a variety of reasons.
In the National League Championship Series, the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in seven games. That group included Jake McCarthy, who the Diamondbacks have had since they selected him in the competitive balance round of the 2018 MLB Draft.
Now, if the Phillies wish to add depth in the outfield, they may consider making a trade for the native of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
After 56 games, McCarthy, who has remained with Arizona the entire season, has a respectable slash line of.268/.354/.370/.724 with two home runs and 13 RBI.
He is eternal.262 hitter, and although he has only hit 14 home runs in his career, the 26-year-old right-fielder can play at either corner and has a good glove.
Should Philadelphia choose this course, it is likely a sign that McCarthy is valued as depth in their rotation and the team feels it has the offensive capability to contend for the World Series.
However, such reasoning can be called into question when considering how the Phillies now have him fit in.
Currently on the disabled list, Brandon Marsh is assigned to Triple-A Lehigh for rehabilitation. At.268 with six home runs, he is the greatest hitter in the outfield overall.
Nick Castellanos, a right fielder, is batting almost.200 despite leading the team in home homers. Cristian Pache is batting just above.200, while Whit Merrifield, who is a dynamic player, is batting below.200. The starting center fielder, Johan Rojas, is batting close to.240 but doesn’t have much pop.
If the Phillies pursue McCarthy, it’s equally possible that they don’t want to pay the prospect price or add payroll for a high-end trade target such as Randy Arozarena of the Tampa Bay Rays or Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox.
McCarthy would be a wise addition to a squad that is seeing more output from its outfield. It might not be sufficient, though.
