Kennedy, a 25-year-old infielder who was designated for assignment earlier this week, was traded by the Detroit Tigers to the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday in return for cash.
Kennedy was marked for assignment by the Tigers on Monday.
A vacancy on the 40-man roster was created by designating Kennedy for assignment and moving first baseman Spencer Torkelson to the minor leagues when the Tigers promoted outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy from Triple-A Toledo.
MORE ABOUT HIM: During his time with the Tigers, Buddy Kennedy makes major plays and wins his wager with Mike Trout.
Kennedy has been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and is currently on the Phillies’ 40-man roster. The Phillies avoided teams with a higher waiver priority by acquiring Kennedy.
Kennedy has a number of Philadelphia-related connections. At Millville (New Jersey) High School, which is located slightly over 40 miles from Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Phillies, he played baseball. His grandfather, 16-year MLB infielder Don Money, was a Phillies player from 1968 to 1972, so he grew up a Phillies fan.
Since fellow infielders Ryan Kreidler (fractured right finger) and Eddys Leonard (strained left oblique) returned to Triple-A Toledo on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, after finishing their rehab assignments, the Tigers designated Kennedy for assignment. If the Tigers required an infielder in the major leagues, Kreidler and Leonard would get promoted before Kennedy once they recovered from injuries.
Kennedy has played in 46 games for the Major League Baseball in portions of three seasons, scoring.205 in his career with a.294 on-base percentage. He has experience in left field, shortstop, and first base in the minor leagues, in addition to playing second and third base in the major leagues.
The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Kennedy in the fifth round of the 2017 draft.
