A striker is born with a passion for scoring. For some, it never gets old. Particularly for this Newcastle star who continues to score despite being close to 40 years old
Over the years, Newcastle has had a thing with one or two cult forwards. Alongside the more giddy Alexander Isak, veteran scorer Callum Wilson is no exception to this rule. Wilson, 31, is still a part of Newcastle’s ever-expanding, ever-rich squad and can look back on an amazing goal total.
Wilson has more goals than you might imagine. His 82 Premier League games for the Magpies, in which he scored prolifically with 42 goals, may be a nod to the wealth of the league around him. He should be a fan favorite, just as he was at Bournemouth. However, he isn’t the only subject of this article.
There is only truly one man that best embodies the phrase “cult” in Tyneside. Let’s examine Papiss Cisse with an emphasis on his 2011–12 campaign and the fact that he is still scoring at the age of 38.
How effective at Newcastle was Papiss Cissé?
Cisse was electrifying for that one season in 2011–12 (perhaps with the exception of 2014–15).
After dominating the Bundesliga with Freiburg and subsequently Ligue 2 with Metz, the Senegalese attacker moved to Newcastle
During the 2010/11 term, Cisse was second to Mario Gomez’s 28 goals in the scoring charts with 22. An eventual total tally of 37 league goals is still a record for a Freiburg player, with that 22 itself being a season record for an African in the Bundesliga – surpassing Tony Yeboah’s 20 goals for Eintracht Frankfurt back in 1992/93.
Newcastle’s ears pricked up after this, as well as after a half-season where he scored nine in 17, and signed Cissé for £10m in January 2012. Here, the fun commenced.
