NBA Player Gets Pete Rose’d, Receives Lifetime Ban For Gambling
The NBA career of Jontay Porter has concluded.
The NBA announced last month that it has launched an inquiry into Porter following the discovery by multiple sportsbooks of sizable prop bets on his performance in various games in which he was forced to sit out at the last minute.
There was more interest in betting on the under for Porter props, which were set at roughly 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists for the Jan. 26 game against the LA Clippers. Porter’s number of made three-pointers had an over/under of 0.5.
Porter only played four minutes that night before he was forced to leave the game due to what the Raptors described as an exacerbation of an eye injury he had sustained four days prior.
In March Porter played just three minutes in game 20 against the Sacramento Kings before leaving due to what the Raptors said was an illness. Porter did not come back. He attempted one shot, pulled down two rebounds, and failed to score. His over/under was set at roughly 5.5 rebounds and 7.5 points by sportsbooks. In a press release, DraftKings Sportsbook stated that Porter’s prop bets were the night’s biggest NBA moneymaker.
The league has concluded its investigation and has reportedly levied a lifetime ban on Porter for gambling.
Shams Charania claims that Porter “disclosed confidential information to sports bettors” in addition to placing wagers on games.
