BREAKING NEWS: Larry Bird Gives 4-Reasons Why He Left His Ex-Wife
As a child, Bird held the belief that individuals who get divorced “were the devil.” However, he found himself in contradiction when, within a year of marrying his first wife, Janet Condra, he experienced the same fate.
Considering the marriage his “biggest mistake,” Larry was forever changed by the strain and anguish of being apart, especially after learning of Condra’s pregnancy following their divorce.
“My worst mistake to date was getting married. I’ve learnt from everything that has ever happened to me, yet those lessons have left me damaged. I’m forever scarred by that,” Bird remarked. “That and being broke are the two things that influenced me most.”
Bird focused his energies on his career after divorcing. In the end, “The Hick from French Lick” rose to prominence as one of the league’s most accomplished players and became the most valuable player in the franchise’s history.
Bird made the decision to try marriage again in 1989. The Celtics forward made the decision to marry Dinah Mattingly, his longtime partner, in a small ceremony attended by just five others.
In a house his friend owned just outside of Terre Haute, Indiana, Larry was married for the second time. The bride and groom decided to wear stonewashed denim to the wedding, which added to the event’s unique appeal.
Bird was trying to start a new life with Dinah, but he was still carrying the wounds from his previous marriage. Even when he fell in love with Dinah, the weight of a broken family followed him around, giving him nightmares on a regular basis.
“The bad dream… I still have it sometimes,” continued Bird. “My wife is trying to get me to come back to her, but Dinah is there, too, and I keep saying to Dinah, ‘I don’t want to go with her, I don’t want to go.'”
Larry’s second marriage to Dinah brought him redemption and enduring love, despite the difficult times he faced as a married teenager. The pair was hitched 34 years ago. Additionally, they adopted Conner and Mariah.
