Paul McMullan believes the Candystripes may have a memorable game tonight since he joined Derry City “to be part of big moments.”
After moving from Dundee to the League of Ireland at the end of June, the Scottish winger was thrown into European action last week.
Starting against HB Torshavn in the Faroe Islands was McMullan, who won the Scottish Championship with Dundee the previous season and was nominated for PFA Player of the Year.
Derry were held to a scoreless draw and will tonight look to write a fresh chapter in their European history, which hasn’t been a great read of late.
The Candystripes have not progressed through a European round since 2014 having lost first time out to Midtylland, Dinamo Minsk, Riteriai and, last year, Riga.
“I joined Derry because I want to be involved in big games and big moments throughout the season, and this is one of them,” McMulan stated.
“Hopefully, the club’s participation in European games will continue.
Last week, both sides were attempting to understand one another. We thought we had it worked out as the game was coming to a close and we were finishing strong.
To be fair, HB Torshavn had a great start to the game and scored a goal against the post. Tonight, we need to make sure we get off to the right start and build strength.
Before moving to Dundee United, McMullan was a teammate of Derry City star Mark Connolly, and he disclosed how important Connolly was to this transfer.
McMullan and his partner had a baby five months ago and the winger added: “My girlfriend is off work until February anyway, so we have time to try something different.
“It’s an exciting challenge and Mark and his family were great. We were a 30-second drive from each other in Dundee and our families are close.”
