Wolverhampton Wanderers ‘leading race to sign Southampton forward Che Adams’
According to reports, Wolverhampton Wanderers intend to pursue Southampton attacker Che Adams.
Compared to their efforts under Bruno Lage and Julen Lopetegui, Wolves have significantly improved in the final third since the appointment of Gary O’Neil as head coach in August.
In their 28 Premier League games in 2023–24, they have scored 42 goals in total, which is only tied for the 11th-highest total in the division.
Nevertheless, Wolves have relied on the heroics of Hwang Hee-chan, Pedro Neto, and Matheus Cunha, who together have contributed precisely half of Wolves’ total in the top division.
All three players are currently sidelined with muscular problems despite their respective efforts, indicating the extent to which they have been utilized by O’Neil during games in the Premier League.
That left Wolves vulnerable in their most recent FA Cup quarterfinal loss to Coventry City, as they were less productive in other areas of the play as a result of a shift in tactics, even though they scored twice in the latter half of the game.
Currently, Nathan Fraser and Leon Chiwome are vying for a starting spot against Aston Villa on Saturday night, but having to pick between the two teenagers has made it more imperative to bring in more seasoned opponents in the summer.
The Telegraph claims that Wolves are ready to intensify their pursuit of Adams after the season is over.
Due to disparities in valuations, the West Midlands team and the Scotland international have previously been continuously linked to put an end to any hopes of a deal getting done.
Regardless of whether Southampton advances from the Championship, Adams has just over three months left on his deal, so things could change in the summer.
Despite being linked with a move away from St Mary’s during the last two transfer windows, the 27-year-old has proven to be a valuable option to the Saints.
From 17 starts and 13 substitute outings, Adams has contributed 10 goals and three assists, the attacker doing enough to retain admirers in the Premier League.
While there is a scenario where Adams could pen a renewal with Southampton, that does not appear to be a priority for either the club or player.
From Wolves’ perspective, signing a proven striker on a free transfer would represent a shrewd piece of business when they need to ensure that they add strength-in-depth while also passing the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations for next season.
Adams has chipped in with 25 goals and 14 assists from 124 career appearances in the Premier League, 88 of those coming from the starting lineup.
