Cowboys Position on Long-Rumored Trade for $96 Million Star Still Firm: Report
There will always be a connection between the older Diggs and his younger brother in Dallas as long as Trevon Diggs plays for the Cowboys (he recently signed a five-year, $97 million deal extension) and as long as Stefon Diggs is a brooder in Buffalo. It exists even if no one is expressing it openly.
And it’s not taking place. It is just not possible for the Cowboys to trade for Stefon Diggs and bring him to Dallas to join his brother. That’s the word from SI.com’s Cowboys insider Mike Fisher, who highlighted a source using strong language to highlight how unlikely a Diggs-and-Diggs scenario actually is.
Nothing new has emerged regarding Stefon Diggs’ potential to dealt to the Cowboys, but just to stifle dissent, SI posed the issue.
Cowboys Are Not Said to Be Seeking a Trade
That being said, at this point, nobody was even suggesting a significant Cowboys trade. Actually, the Cowboys have had a rather quiet first week of free agency. They seem determined to reassemble essentially the same club as the previous season, with the exception of a few crucial players like starting running back Tony Pollard and left tackle Tyron Smith.
The Cowboys haven’t moved to replace either, presumably relying on the draft and/or the bargain bin to fill the voids. It appears that the strategy is to continue with the current roster of the Cowboys and, in essence, be prepared to blow everything up if the team fails to make it out of the playoffs once more.
The only new player the Cowboys have added is linebacker Eric Kendricks, who was a great addition. However, there has been annoyance that the Cowboys haven’t made more of an effort. Team vice president Stephen Jones encouraged fans to be patient, effectively informing them that the team will be going trash diving in the upcoming weeks.
“It’s crazy and there are big, big, big bucks involved on that first negotiation day. But as you can see, things are starting to settle down,” Jones stated, as reported by The Athletic. We believe you can be effective and achieve wonderful things there. I believe that we have in the past, whether it was through a trade or just a simple agreement, as we did with Kendricks yesterday.
More players will undoubtedly be released throughout the league as players advance and fulfill their cap. You never know what you might see that isn’t visible to you right now. We feel well-prepared to act quickly on all of those matters. And I’m excited about it.
Stefon Diggs Commencing $96 Million Extension
Diggs is now beginning a four-year, $96 million deal extension that includes a $48 million guarantee. In light of the fact that the Cowboys are considering giving Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb huge contract extensions and are increasingly likely to absorb the big $59.4 million salary hit for Dak Prescott this year rather than renegotiate his deal (which may still happen), The contract with Stefon Diggs is a bust.
It’s possible that a Diggs deal is more BS than it was in the past, but that makes the argument pointless.
Notwithstanding his lucrative contract, Stefon Diggs yet remained pensive in Buffalo. Diggs was not one of the six harsh cuts the cap-strapped Bills had to make last week in order to stay in compliance. He wasn’t traded either. Furthermore, there has been no discussion about his trade.
On Twitter/X, he did, however, post the mysterious phrase, “Ready for watever.”
Perhaps that indicates a trade is on the horizon, though it seems unlikely given his pay. And most definitely not to Dallas.
