Derrick Henry says Cowboys never showed interest: ‘I don’t know what’s really going on over there’
The new Ravens RB says he would have considered becoming a Cowboy
Although star running back Derrick Henry is thrilled to be a member of the Baltimore Ravens, he seems a touch irritated with one team that didn’t even attempt to contact him during the offseason.
Following his two-year, $16 million contract agreement with the Ravens, Henry recently discussed whether or not the Dallas Cowboys had shown interest in signing him. Since Henry’s contract with the Titans was about to expire, he was available to the Cowboys, who need a running back.
“Dallas didn’t even… not at all,” Henry stated in an Adam Schein interview. “I’m not really aware of what’s happening over there. They weren’t in dispute. Baltimore piqued my curiosity the most and was a place I wanted to be. I’m delighted we completed it, but there was no call from the Cowboys.
Would Henry have been interested in playing for the Cowboys if they had called?
“Yes, without a doubt,” Henry answered. “I remain there during the off-season. It’s an excellent organization. Although it would have been a wonderful opportunity, I’m grateful that I ended up where I wanted to be—in Baltimore. They also wanted me to be here. It’s the ideal fit. I’m thrilled. I’m having a great time right now with my family. All I want to do is get to work.”
Henry is on his way to Baltimore, where he will team up with league MVP Lamar Jackson, rather than Dallas. From a Tennessee squad that was rebuilding to a Baltimore team that led the AFC in regular-season wins in 2023, Henry will see a change of teams.
Fans who expected their team to have been more active during the first week of free agency are unlikely to be pleased with the Cowboys for their lack of interest in Henry. The sole significant acquisition made by the Cowboys was the signing of former All-Pro linebacker Eric Kendricks, who had originally committed to the 49ers but then changed his mind.
Although the addition of Kendricks was significant, the Cowboys still need a running back following the club Give Tony Pollard the freedom to go. After Pollard agreed to a three-year contract with the Titans, he eventually took Henry’s job in Nashville.
Although Dallas didn’t attempt to sign Henry, it doesn’t seem to be ruling out the possibility of adding another former league rushing champion. Writer for Cowboys.com Patrik Walker recently hinted that the team would bring back Ezekiel Elliott, given the two parties have been in contact since Elliott’s release by the team throughout the summer. Elliott, who is a free agent at the moment, played for the New England Patriots in 2023.
