Potential Celtics Target Joins Buyout Market
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that the Atlanta Hawks have decided to release guard Patty Mills. The 15-year NBA veteran will shortly be put up for buyout.
Mills played 10.6 minutes a game, averaging 2.7 points and 1.1 rebounds throughout his 19 games with the Hawks. He had a 38.2% three-point shooting percentage in this restricted role.
There is presently one open roster space for the Boston Celtics, which they might use to add Mills. The backcourt depth chart for Boston right now includes Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, Payton Pritchard, Jaden Springer, and JD Davison.
Aside from Mills, six-time All-Star Blake Griffin is another candidate to fill the C’s final roster spot. Players on the team are lobbying for the five-time All-NBA selection to return to fill that vacancy.
The deadline for a player to get bought out of his contract and remain playoff-eligible is Mar. 1. To state it explicitly, they must get waived by then, but they do not have to latch on with a new team by that date.
