2024 NFL Free Agency: Best Fits for Mike Evans, Tee Higgins
This offseason, clubs in need of receivers have little trouble finding any. However, Mike Evans and Tee Higgins are likely the two biggest names available in free agency season.
The 25-year-old Higgins has finished an amazing four years with the Cincinnati Bengals. Alongside Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, the 2020 second-round selection recorded two seasons of 1,000 yards of football. Should he dodge the franchise tag, he will now be eligible for free agency.
One of the most reliable receivers in NFL history is Evans, 30. Over his ten seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Evans has won Super Bowl LV and broken the 1,000-yard mark every year. Evans is a two-time All-Pro who has only missed nine games in his career, demonstrating his remarkable durability.
Which new clubs would be the most logical choice if the two decided to quit their respective teams? Let’s examine this.
The Giants desperately need receiving support. There was no player who had more than 800 receiving yards in the previous campaign, thus improvements are needed if Daniel Jones is going to play for New York at any time in his current contract.
For a Giants squad that finished 31st in receiving yards in 2023—only ahead of the Carolina Panthers—Higgins or Evans would undoubtedly supply that. In the end, with his advanced age and New York’s current position in the contending cycle, Higgins would make a better target. Nevertheless, Evans is probably less expensive, which frees up general manager Joe Schoen’s salary for other needs on the team.
General manager Chris Ballard has to hold onto Pittman, but he should also be trying to recruit a running partner on the opposing side. Additionally, moving Josh Downs to the third slot on the depth chart would provide second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson a wealth of options, even if he was a great complement as a rookie with 771 yards.
Making Richardson the best version of himself is the first step in the Colts’ AFC playoff strategy. Evans or Higgins would not be detrimental to that cause.
The Panthers are the club that has to improve their offense the most this offseason. However, Carolina cannot use the draft to improve despite being a two-win catastrophe in 2023 since it traded its first-round pick to the Chicago Bears in the previous year. When the market opens in March, Dan Morgan, the new general manager, will thus need to become inventive. Given that Higgins attended the adjacent Clemson University for his collegiate career, the Panthers could have a little recruitment edge.
To be honest, given the status of the squad, Carolina will likely have to outbid other teams in order to get Higgins or Evans, but if it aids in Bryce Young’s development, that cost is worth paying.
2. Patriots of New England
New England has entered a new era, and the Patriots must rebuild their offense to begin the Jerod Mayo era.
Their passing offense was weak in the previous season. With 561 yards, rookie wide receiver DeMario Douglas led the club. New England needs to get a reliable outside weapon to intimidate opponents as it may use the third selection to choose a quarterback.
Given his youth, Higgins is a wonderful match, enabling him to play at his best while the new quarterback is on a cheap contract. Regarding Evans, he would offer a dependable tool with a plethora of expertise. And with a projected cap space of $66 million, the Patriots can afford both even if they won’t be cheap.
