Cowboys Add Former Russell Wilson Coach To Mike McCarthy Staff
The Dallas Cowboys are hiring a new offensive assistant in Boston College’s Steve Shimko, who previously worked with Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks.
Even a month into the offseason, Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys are still making new additions to the coaching staff.
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys are hiring former Boston College Eagles offensive coordinator Steve Shimko as an offensive assistant. On Sunday, Shimko shared a picture of him and his family wearing Cowboys gear, indicating that this hire has been in the works for a few days.
Shimko, 34, has spent the past four seasons with Boston College and worked his way up the coaching ladder. He started as a tight ends coach in 2020, then moved up to quarterbacks coach in 2022 and finally added offensive coordinator to his title in 2023. Notably, the Eagles averaged 198.3 rushing yards per game under Shimko’s watch this season, ranking second in the ACC and 16th in the country.
Shimko had a noteworthy NFL career as an assistant quarterbacks coach with the Seattle Seahawks before attending Boston College. He was tight with Russell Wilson, the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks at the time, who tossed 76 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions in Shimko’s two seasons with the team.
Additionally, Shimko met Brian Schottenheimer in Seattle. Schottenheimer currently works as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys and was the offensive coordinator for the Seahawks in the past. It is certainly welcome to Schottenheimer to have a familiar person join him.
Even further back, Shimko participated in a couple additional noteworthy collegiate careers. At Rutgers, he made the switch from player to coach right away. He also made appearances at Georgia and Western Michigan.
