Determining the tackle position opposite Trent Williams should be one of the 49ers’ top goals this offseason. It’s not easy to get quality offensive tackle play, but San Francisco may have just happened to be in a good enough season to have this as one of their primary needs.
In a conference call on Thursday, NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah hinted that this year’s draft may include up to ten starter offensive tackles.
It’s a loaded tackle class, according to Jeremiah. “Just looking at that top group, there are ten or eleven people that are very intriguing. From that tackle group, I believe we’ll see a number of starters, including several day one starts.
Finding the best player is usually a better draft approach than just determining a need and selecting a player there, but it’s difficult to think the 49ers would pass up the chance to select a starting-caliber tackle if one is available when they pick at No. 31.
Finding an upgrade over Colton McKivitz at right tackle would be a huge boost for an offensive line in need of more reliable long-term solutions. Ideally, they would identify a man who can start at right tackle for the time being and eventually switch to the left side. It appears that 2024 will be a favorable year to locate such support.
The 49ers have struggled recently to get any production out of running backs they drafted in the third round. After a dismal 2021 season, running back Trey Sermon was not even granted a second season with the team, and now, after just two years with San Francisco, running back Tyrion Davis-Price has joined a new team.
The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Davis-Price, a third-round pick in the 2022 selection, to a reserve/future contract, according to a Tuesday morning announcement from his agent. That puts him on a similar path to the one Sermon took after joining the 49ers with a late-round selection in the second round of the draft.
After being added to the initial 53-man roster for the 2022 season, Sermon was dismissed. With time, he gained acceptance with the Eagles.
