Sasa Kalajdzic: Wolves striker suffers serious knee injury on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt
Sasa Kalajdzic, a striker for Wolves, had a major knee injury while playing on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt.
The 26-year-old Kalajdzic is out “indefinitely” due to a damaged cruciate and lateral ligament in his right knee.
In five games since joining the Bundesliga team during the January transfer window, the Austrian international has tallied one assist.
After paying £15 million to Wolves in 2022, he missed the remainder of the season due to a knee injury he sustained on his debut.
He made a comeback this season, making 13 appearances and scored three goals.
Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs stated that Kalajdzic had been “incredibly unlucky” and that the “best thing for Sasa and us long-term is for him to go and get lots of football” when he departed on loan in January.
After just ten minutes of play against SC Freiberg, the 6’7′′ Austrian international went down clutching his right knee. The German club confirmed on February 19 that the towering forward had suffered a rupture of the cruciate and lateral ligaments in his right knee in Sunday’s away game against SC Freiburg and will be out indefinitely. Eintracht Frankfurt wish Kalajdzic a good and speedy recovery. This is the third time in five years that the same injury has occurred. The first happened in 2019, during a pre-season training camp for VB Stuttgart, for which he had just signed. After many months out, he returned to fitness and scored 23 goals in 57 appearances.
This outstanding comeback attracted the attention of the Premier League team, who paid Stuttgart £15 million for his services at the close of the summer transfer window in 2022 and signed him to a five-year deal with a one-year option.
He made his debut in old gold and black just three days after signing, in a 1-0 win against Southampton, but was substituted at half time with what was later identified as yet another ruptured ACL. Missing the rest of the 2022-23 season, the gigantic striker returned the squad at the beginning of 2023-24, with Gary O’Neil at the helm. Despite making 11 appearances and scoring twice off the bench, the club decided to send him to Germany on loan, partially in consideration of the fact that his partner was due to give birth to their first child.
