Even before the team formally announced Jim Harbaugh as its new coach, the 2024 Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff swiftly gained notoriety. But Harbaugh might soon be reminded of how easily NFL teams get talent from other coaching staffs throughout the league.
Reports of well-known figures joining the Chargers coaching staff appeared shortly after it was announced that Harbaugh would take Brandon Staley’s place in Los Angeles. One of the best defensive coordinators in football, Jesse Minter of Michigan, would take on a similar job in Los Angeles.

Jay Harbaugh, the son of Jim Harbaugh, and strength coach Ben Herbert were two of them. However, it seems Jim’s ideal team of assistant coaches might not materialize after all, a few days after his press conference.
Jay Harbaugh is apparently being given serious consideration for a position with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports.
At first, 34-year-old Harbaugh appeared like a no-brainer addition to the Chargers coaching staff. In 2015, the Californian became a tight ends coach and assistant special teams coordinator for his father’s organization. He was the Wolverines’ special teams coordinator by 2017 and served as a position coach from 2017 to 2023.
Jay had the ideal chance to rejoin the NFL after over ten years of coaching in college when his father relocated to Los Angeles. He worked as an offensive quality control coach with the Baltimore Ravens from 2012 to 2014 before coming to Michigan’s staff.But according to reports, Mike Macdonald, the new coach of the Seahawks, is ready to go off against his old employer for the position of rising assistant. Macdonald and Jay have previously collaborated, with Macdonald holding the position of defensive coordinator for the Wolverines in 2021.
Although most people would anticipate that Harbaugh will eventually join his father’s staff, his NFL career would benefit more from working somewhere else. Jay’s journey to becoming an NFL head coach may potentially be accelerated by competing against his father at the top level, learning from a new head coach, and absorbing principles from a different staff. It would be another big addition in Macdonald’s early days as a first-year head coach if the Seahawks were to sign their guy.
