February 8, Manila (Reuters) – Rescuers found more bodies from the landslide that devastated a region in southern Philippines on Thursday, increasing the number of people still missing to 110 and the official death toll to 11, according to disaster officials.
Tuesday night in the province of Davao de Oro, a landslide occurred in the village of Maco, burying residences and two buses that, according to a provincial official, were carrying over twenty passengers.More than 1,166 households had been evacuated from their houses, according to a statement released on Maco’s disaster agency’s social media account. The number of missing people had increased to 110 from the more than 40 earlier reported.
Davao de Oro has seen intense rains in recent weeks, which have caused landslides and flooding.
Rescuers are still hopeful about finding survivors, according to Rosa Cristina Rosete-Manuel, a spokesman for the military’s Eastern Command, which is assisting in the lead rescue operations.February 9, KYIV (Reuters) – In his first public statements as head of the armed forces, Kyiv’s new chief of staff for the armed forces stated on Friday that the country’s armed forces need to adapt and develop new ways to fight in order to defeat Russian invaders.
At a difficult moment, Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi, who had served as commander of ground forces, was elevated to overall command of Ukraine’s 800,000-strong armed forces on Thursday. This is the largest reorganization of top brass since the start of the war.In a post on Telegram, Syrskyi stated, “Only changes and constant improvement of the means and methods of warfare will make it possible to achieve success on this path,” citing electronic warfare and drones as two examples of cutting-edge technology that would aid Ukraine in winning.
The careful, practical tone contrasted sharply with the lofty language that Ukrainian leaders had employed during the conflict.
After introducing Syrskyi to the General Staff, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated that he would provide “all possible support for the actions and decisions of the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”Umerov posted on Facebook, saying, “Defense is in good hands.”
The commander transition occurs during a challenging time for Ukraine, which has not been able to retake major territory since late 2022 and now faces the possibility of a suspension in military aid supplies from the US, its main ally.
Now, after months of attempts to take the town of Avdiivka, Moscow’s soldiers are pushing forward across the front lines and gaining ground bit by bit.As ground commander, Syrskyi was in charge of two of the biggest victories of the first year of the war: the swift counteroffensive in the northeast and the successful defense of the capital of Ukraine at the beginning of the Russian invasion.
His leadership during Ukraine’s protracted defense of the eastern town of Bakhmut, where thousands of soldiers died on both sides before Kyiv’s forces withdrew in May 2023, has drawn criticism from some Ukrainian soldiers, nevertheless.
Zelenskiy stated in his statement from yesterday that Syrskyi would introduce his new group with the intention of “resetting” the armed forces.
