Aaron Jones Selected as a Salute To Service Award Finalist
Aaron Jones, the running back for the Green Bay Packers, was named a finalist this week by the NFL for the 13th annual Salute to Service Award, which is given out by USAA. NFL players, coaches, and team executives/personnel who “best demonstrated support for the military community” are honored with this award. According to Packers.com editor Mike Spofford, this is Jones’ second nomination (2018) and first selection as a finalist.
Aaron Jones has contributed significantly to the Packers’ Salute to Service initiatives. As both of his parents were U.S. Army veterans, he has made aiding veterans a priority in his community work. Jones has toured military installations, spent time with injured veterans in the hospital, and promoted Patriot K9s of Wisconsin, an organization that pairs wounded warriors with assistance dogs. Through yearly galas and other fundraisers, Jones’ A&A All the Way Foundation assists military families with financial needs. Xavier, his brother, is an active Air Force member as well.
Following his original nomination, Jones stated, “I try to get involved as much as I can whenever the Packers have anything that involves the military because that’s near and dear to my heart.”
The date is January 14, 2012. We are in San Francisco at Candlestick Park. The 49ers need a touchdown with 14 seconds remaining, down three, and facing a third down to maintain their hopes of making the playoffs without having to go to OT. In the meantime, the Saints can draw a conclusion from this and move on to the NFC Championship Game. We need to look back in time to comprehend how we got here and to fully appreciate what this moment signifies.
Three finalists were chosen this week based on votes from fans, an NFL internal committee, and USAA. In November, one nominee from each team was chosen. The NFL, USAA, and members of the US Military will make up the panel of judges who will select the recipient of the Salute to Service Award.
Jones is vying for the prize with long snapper Joe Cardona of the New England Patriots and tight end George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers.
