Despite being held to a scoreless draw by Crystal Palace on Saturday, Newcastle United believed they had a goal wrongfully disallowed.
Michael Salisbury’s decision to reverse Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal after VAR intervention has drawn criticism from numerous players, managers, analysts, and past officials.
Despite Mitchell nudging the Newcastle player before the goal, a VAR review ruled that Joe Willock fouled Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, and the goal was disallowed as a result. On September 3, 2022, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, during the Premier League game between Newcastle United and Crystal Palace at St. James Park, Joe Willock of Newcastle United receives medical attention after colliding with Vicente Guaita of Crystal Palace (not pictured), resulting in a VAR decision to rule out a Newcastle United goal. Newcastle’s goal against Crystal Palace was disallowed, and the Daily Star listed the top 10 worst VAR rulings in the Premier League, placing it third.
Because it appeared to ignore the fact that Willock was prodded into Guaita by Mitchell, the use of VAR was criticized as a “blunder.”
The disallowed goal by West Bromwich Albion against Southampton in 2021 is ranked second because Mbaye Diagne was obviously onside when an offside call was made against him.
The ‘worst’ VAR decision in the Premier League occurred earlier this year when Rodri seemed to handle the ball inside the area as Everton was awarded a straightforward penalty against Manchester City. A VAR inspection revealed that the midfielder’s arm was struck about halfway up, but no handball was called.
Fourth place went to a contentious VAR decision over the weekend that prevented West Ham from tying Chelsea late. After Jarrod Bowen leapt over goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Maxwel Cornet scored before VAR gave Chelsea a free kick.
