Zach Ertz Signs With Detroit Lions
By adding tight end Zach Ertz, a former Super Bowl winner for the Philadelphia Eagles, to their practice squad, the Detroit Lions are kicking off the postseason in style. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero says there’s a chance Ertz may get upgraded prior to Sunday’s NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Up until late November, when the Arizona Cardinals approved his request to be released, Ertz remained a member of the team. This allowed him to join a contender and pursue a second Super Bowl ring.
Despite the fact that it took him longer than expected to locate that squad, he now has the opportunity to raise the Lombardi once more.
Following backup tight end Brock Wright’s injury during Sunday’s playoff victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions made the move. Wright’s availability for the title game on Sunday “doesn’t look real good,” according to head coach Dan Campbell, the Detroit Free Press reports.
For his part, LaPorta’s health isn’t even 100%. The emerging star is still wearing a knee brace and has just recently recovered from a hyperextended knee.
This suggests that Ertz may play a bigger role in the Lions’ offensive scheme than merely a stand-in. They do have two competent fullbacks who can block, but Ertz provides Detroit a Super Bowl-experienced tight end who can catch passes.
In Super Bowl LII of 2018, Ertz scored the game-winning touchdown that helped the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the formidable New England Patriots.
On Sunday, the Lions will take on the renowned 49ers, an NFC powerhouse, with their own formidable force. With an abundance of offensive weapons, the 49ers’ formidable linebacker tandem and strong defense may have forced the Lions to acquire Ertz.
Ertz is going to have his job cut out for him since Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw have left their mark on the field for the ‘9ers, earning the title of greatest linebacker tandem in the game for many.
However, I’m really excited to see what he can accomplish in combination with LaPorta. If Ertz still has it in him, they may be rather dangerous together.
