The ongoing redistricting attempt in the Detroit area: Five things to know
This week, the Michigan redistricting panel resumed the process of drawing up state House districts for the metro Detroit area, trying to comply with court directives to exclude ethnic demographics.
Following the invalidation of thirteen state House and Senate districts by a federal court decision on December 21, a three-judge panel mandated the creation of new state House maps by March 29.

After a group of metro Detroiters successfully challenged the present maps on the grounds that commissioners inappropriately utilized racial statistics to weaken the power of Black voters, mapmakers were forced to create new political district boundaries, barring intervention by the Supreme Court.
According to federal justices, commissioners frequently “identified high-density African-American communities and then to dilute them” by using the map-drawing tools at their disposal.
In an effort to make the deadline, commissioners have set an ambitious mapping timetable. They will also gather in person for the first time in months next week to hear directly from people in the metro Detroit area.
The U.S. Supreme Court heard an appeal from the commission of the federal panel’s order, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has separately requested that any modifications be postponed until after the 2024 elections to prevent electoral upheaval. Nevertheless, the legal drama is far from done. It’s uncertain if either appeal will be heard by the justices.
