Darius Slay gave his evaluation of what could have been done better after the Eagles’ disastrous season-ending stretch, particularly on defense.
Following their defeat in Super Bowl LVII against the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia parted ways with both of its coordinators, Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon. The former was hired as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, while the latter was hired as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
Following a season with the Seattle Seahawks, Sean Desai was brought in to take Gannon’s position as the team’s new defensive coordinator. Slay advocated for Dennard Wilson, the defensive backs coach, to take over, but Wilson left to take a position coaching the defensive backs with the Baltimore Ravens. The star corner wished that move had never been made.
According to Marcus Hayes of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Slay told reporters on Wednesday, “I think he would have made a lot of difference.” We loved him very much. I really believed that he ought to have stayed.
Slay continued, stating that it didn’t matter what job Wilson had returned to, but after Matt Patricia’s unsuccessful stint as the offensive play-caller for the New England Patriots, he was also brought on as a senior assistant.
After Week 13, Nick Sirianni appointed Patricia as the defensive play-caller, although Desai remained on staff to oversee the defense. Troy Aikman called the choice a “panic move,” and the Eagles lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round as a result of the odd coupling that didn’t work out.
Slay, who has a lengthy history with Patricia, used a dubious example to consider the disastrous outcome of a choice.
It’s difficult for a coach to have two identities, according to Slay. It’s similar to being married twice. You realize how challenging two weddings would likely be? to live in a home (with) two women’s distinct personalities? That is difficult.
The 33-year-old, who is still wed to his spouse, appeared self-aware enough to recognize the female reporters in attendance.
Slay added, “No offense to the women.” “That is absurd discourse. It’s possible for someone to desire their feet or shoulders massaged.
It was an odd way to characterize the Eagles’ season’s collapse. Patricia, who might play for Bill Belichick’s next squad, is expected to file for divorce from Philadelphia.
