The people who know Nick Sirianni the best would tell you, almost proudly, that even as a young child growing up in Western New York, he was a touch “cocky.” Additionally, when Philadelphia is winning, that brash confidence appeals to Eagles supporters more than opponents.
However, “cocky” felt strange following the Eagles’ humiliating 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night in the NFL playoffs.
“I’m not thinking about that,” Sirianni said in response to a question concerning his job security after his team’s disastrous two-month season-ending collapse. “I’m considering the boys. Once more, there are many guys in that locker room—every single guy there—and they have all given this their personal all. I don’t worry about myself.
Excellent response. Selfless. empathy for other people. Even modest.
How will Sirianni handle these issues now? Prime Nick is his response.
“We have faith in ourselves,” Sirianni declared. “This is not a pointless place for me to be sitting. We put in a lot of effort to get to where we are now, at the pinnacle of our field.
That seems very defensive, and when combined with haughtiness, Eagles supporters may find it tough to swallow. In his three seasons as the Eagles’ coach, Sirianni has advanced to the postseason each time. He’s has a 34-17 record overall in Philadelphia, and he made it to the Super Bowl the previous season
He was “at the top of his profession” or very close to it at that point. It sounds vacuous and arrogant to act as though that’s where Nick Sirianni is still “sitting” a year later.
