The veteran defensive back from the Texas Longhorns is moving to The Plains to play his last collegiate football season with the Auburn Tigers.
Jerrin Thompson, a former defensive back for the Texas Longhorns, moved to a new city and conference.
Coincidentally, Oklahoma and the Longhorns will both be joining the same conference as of July 1.
On Monday morning, Thompson made his commitment to Auburn official on his social media page. Under Hugh Freeze, the second-year coach of The Plains, he will have one more year of eligibility.
Due to his expertise, Thompson, a four-year player, was anticipated to be among the more sought-after defensive backs in the marketplace. Thompson has participated in at least ten games every season since his rookie year.
Last season, Thompson was a standout covering player for the Forty Acres, helping Texas win its first conference championship since 2009 and earn a spot in the College Football Playoffs. He racked up 38 tackles, three interceptions, and seven pass breakups in 14 games.
In 2022, Thompson had his greatest season with 82 tackles, a pick, and seven pass breakups. Based on votes from the coaches in the conference, he was named honorable mention for the All-Big 12 team.
After Thompson entered the portal after losing to Washington in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal Sugar Bowl, Auburn, which ended 6-7 under Freeze in Year 1, expressed interest. The NFL Draft claimed the careers of four defensive backs for the Tigers, including safety Jaylin Simpson and cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett.
