A brief history of the World Table Tennis Championships and its all-time medal table are examined by Olympics.com.
In 1926, table tennis’s World Championships featured men’s and women’s singles, men’s and mixed doubles, and men’s team competitions. The tournament took place in London, England.
The women’s doubles event was first established during the 1928 World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, while the women’s team event debuted in 1934 in Paris, France.
Up until 1997, the team events were a component of all World Championships; beyond that, they were divided into individual and team events. The inaugural World Team Championships were held in 2000 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, while the last combined World Championships were held in Osaka, Japan, in 2001.
European nations, particularly Hungary, dominated the early editions of the Championships until the 1950s, when the People’s Republic of China eventually joined and started taking home medals.
The Swaythling Cup is the oldest table tennis trophy. It was initially given to the winning men’s team in London in 1926. The remaining six events’ trophies were not awarded until the women’s team in 1933, the singles competitions in 1929 and 1931, and the three doubles events in the late 1940s.
