Will 2024 be the year IPOs finally come roaring back, after a more than two-year lull? That seems unlikely, but then again, all venture-backed startups have to exit sometime, so at least some companies will likely decide to head to the public markets this year.
With that in mind, we once again offer up some ideas for companies we think would be top contenders when the public markets eventually reopen for new tech listings.
Before Friday’s deadline, Matheus Nunes of Wolves is being pursued by Premier League winners Manchester City, and he has taken matters into his own hands.
City is thinking about making a second offer for the player after the Black Country outfit rejected their first attempt to sign him. Even though Wolves is reluctant to sell, the Portuguese are still making an effort to press their way through.
He has stopped training with Wolves and has expressed his wish to move to the Etihad Stadium. The former Sporting star might need to take a look at players who have done the same as a word of warning.
A number of players have gone on strike in efforts to secure lucrative moves and it hasn’t always gone to plan. Take a look at a few of the more infamous examples below:
Nunes is not the first player to attempt to fabricate a move to Manchester City, and he most likely won’t be the last either. Just eighteen months after leading Leicester to the Premier League title, Riyad Mahrez made an attempt at the same.
Before the 2017–18 season, he was left in an airport lounge, waiting for word of a potential move, but nothing materialized. And with that, the Algerian was forced back to the East Midlands.
Just a few months later, Mahrez attempted the same during the January transfer window when he went on strike for two weeks. Once more, the Foxes refused, and it wasn’t until the next summer that they finally agreed to sell him.
The winger won four Premier League championships and was a big success at the Etihad Stadium.
