Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to raise some funds for a midfield signing in the January transfer window and for very good reason, a report has revealed.
Ange Postecoglou started Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in midfield for Tottenham against Liverpool in their most recent Premier League game. However, it’s possible that both of those players may represent Mali or Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations over the winter.
Given this, Tottenham would be foolish to trade Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, despite the Danish international’s desire to depart and the fact that Juventus has made him a top target.
Hojbjerg is still a candidate for Juventus to replace Paul Pogba, according to La Gazzetta Dello Sport. However, as the source notes, Tottenham’s need to find a replacement for Bissouma and Sarr will dash any aspirations the Serie A team had of acquiring him on loan.
To counter this, Tottenham might accept Juventus’ offer of €30 million (£26 million) for Hojbjerg in order to use the money to sign a new midfielder of their own.
It’s unknown at this time who Tottenham might be pursuing in the middle of the field. However, if they are able to make money off of Hojbjerg, it would be possible for them to revive the department, even though there would be some short-term risk until the new signing arrives.
Hojbjerg joined Tottenham in 2020 after being acquired by them from Southampton. He has never played in Serie A previously, so he might take on a new challenge with Juventus, the team from which Spurs acquired Rodrigo Bentancur, another midfield rival, in 2022.
Hojbjerg hoping for more gametime
Hojbjerg has been used as a substitute in six of the league’s seven games so far this season, but Postecoglou has only used him as a starter once in the Carabao Cup, which Tottenham has already exited.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder might feel deserving of more regular playing time at age 28, which might persuade him to look for a chance at another team. Furthermore, Hojbjerg’s contract in north London will have expired by the time the January transfer window rolls around, leaving him with just 18 months left on his current deal.
Due to the lack of sense in keeping a player who is uneasy, Tottenham may still think about letting him leave in January. However, they must begin compiling a list of replacements as soon as possible, especially in light of the fact that they will suffer a temporary shortage throughout the winter as well.
