Lions release fullback one day after he returns from injured reserve and sign kicker to active squad
The Detroit Lions have had to make yet another round of painful decisions as their roster has changed multiple times in less than a day.
The organization announced on Friday afternoon that they have promoted offensive lineman Michael Schofield to the practice squad and moved kicker Michael Badgley from the practice squad to the active roster. The Lions also announced the release of defensive tackle Chris Smith from the practice squad and the waiver of fullback Jason Cabinda in addition to the signing.
The decision to waive Cabinda comes one day removed from the Lions activating him from the injured reserve list (IR). With him out of the picture, the Lions still have one roster spot open before they take the field against the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington on Saturday. C.J. Gardner-Johnson and James Houston, both of whom have returned to practice from their respective injuries, are listed as out of action for this week.
That paves the way for the Lions to elevate veteran linebacker Bruce Irvin from the practice squad. Since signing with the Lions on Nov. 13, Irvin has seen action in only one game, a Week 13 victory over the New Orleans Saints, where he registered a sack. The Lions have struggled this season against some of the league’s best quarterbacks, especially ones that make plays outside of the pocket. Dallas’ Dak Prescott has been dominant when playing at home, hence the Cowboys being unblemished at AT&T Stadium this season (7-0). With generating pressure on QBs being an issue for Detroit, it wouldn’t be a shocker to see Irvin suit up this weekend.
