Florida State University (FSU) is experiencing significant roster changes, with several offensive players transferring to Southeastern Conference (SEC) schools and new recruits joining the Seminoles. Head Coach Mike Norvell has been actively managing these transitions, aiming to strengthen the team’s performance for the upcoming season.
Departures to the SEC
Two notable offensive players have departed FSU for SEC programs:
Malik Benson (Wide Receiver): Benson, who transferred to FSU from Alabama, has re-entered the transfer portal due to a new NCAA ruling granting an additional year of eligibility to JUCO players. During his tenure at FSU, Benson recorded 25 receptions for 311 yards and one touchdown in the 2024 season.
Micah Pettus (Offensive Lineman): Pettus, a transfer from Ole Miss, has joined FSU to bolster the offensive line. Standing at 6’7″ and weighing 350 pounds, Pettus brings significant size, strength, and SEC experience to the Seminoles. Coach Norvell expressed excitement about Pettus’s potential impact on the team’s offensive front.
New Additions
In response to these departures, FSU has secured commitments from several promising players:
Thomas Castellanos (Quarterback): Castellanos, known for his dynamic playmaking abilities, has transferred to FSU. Over the past two seasons, he has thrown for over 3,500 yards and more than 30 touchdowns, showcasing significant arm talent and improved passing efficiency. Coach Norvell believes Castellanos will be a great addition to the team’s quarterback roster.
Adrian Medley (Offensive Lineman): Medley, an experienced lineman from UCF, has committed to FSU. Standing at 6’5″ and weighing 305 pounds, Medley has played nearly 1,400 snaps in his career and brings valuable experience to the offensive line. His addition is expected to strengthen FSU’s offensive front.
Randy Pittman Jr. (Tight End): Pittman, also from UCF, has joined the Seminoles. With 32 receptions for 416 yards and two touchdowns in the 2024 season, Pittman adds versatility to FSU’s offense, capable of playing multiple roles including traditional tight end, wide receiver, and H-back.
Coach Norvell’s Perspective
Coach Mike Norvell has been proactive in addressing the team’s roster changes. Regarding the addition of Thomas Castellanos, Norvell stated, “Thomas Castellanos is one of the most dynamic playmakers in college football… He will be a great addition with his ability on the field, and he will be a tremendous complement to our roster as we bring this program back to the Florida State standard.”
Similarly, on acquiring offensive lineman Micah Pettus, Norvell commented, “I’m excited to have Micah joining our program. He brings great size, strength, athletic ability, and experience here to the Nole Family… We are excited to add Micah and believe he’ll be a wonderful fit to our team.”
These strategic additions and departures reflect Coach Norvell’s commitment to revitalizing FSU’s football program, aiming to enhance both offensive and defensive capabilities for future success.
