Baltimore Orioles release a fan favorite from the Philadelphia Phillies in the past.
An infielder for the Philadelphia Phillies was released by his new team.
Jean Segura, a former infielder for the Philadelphia Phillies, unexpectedly signed a minor level contract with the Baltimore Orioles on August 9.
Before this signing, Segura had not participated in a professional baseball game since July 2023, when he was a member of the Miami Marlins.
Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports that the Phillies fan favorite has already asked to be removed from the Orioles’ Triple-A Norfolk team, meaning his time with the team is already up.
The 34-year-old may have believed he had a chance to make the big league roster in Baltimore, but his chances of being called up appeared remote after he slashed.137/.250/.196 in 51 at-bats.
nante carrera en la MLB.
With more than 11 seasons in the major leagues, Segura has accrued the requisite 10 years of service time for a pension. He may choose to look for another opportunity or call it a career.
Although he hasn’t stated that he plans to retire, it’s something to watch.
Despite his decline in performance during the last two years, the Dominican Republic native had a fantastic career. With 110 home runs in 5,496 at-bats, he had a career slash line of.281/.327/.401 and a lifetime WAR of 26.2.
During his four seasons with the team, he was helpful to Philadelphia, particularly in 2021 when he hit 14 home runs, the second-most in a season, and earned an OPS+ of 111.
He had a difficult postseason with the Phillies in 2022, both in the NLCS and the World Series, but he had a significant role in the team’s victory over the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS.
Segura is a solid professional who should be happy with his outstanding MLB career if he chooses to hang up the cleats.
