Braves select their September call-ups, bolstering the outfield and bullpen for the final stretch.
With a two-game advantage over the rival New York Mets for the last NL Wild Card position, the Atlanta Braves head into the final month of the regular season. As September approaches, every Major League Baseball team’s roster grows to 28 spaces, enabling them to call up a pitcher and a position player for the final stretch.
This morning, the Braves revealed which two guys they will be calling up. The first is Eli White, an outfielder who is well-known among fans. The second is John Brebbia, a pitcher who has not pitched an inning for the team.
Zach Logue, a left-handed reliever, was DFA’d by the Braves to create space on the 40-man roster. Eli White might be used as a pinch runner in pinch situations and as a defensive replacement in late innings.
It may come as a surprise to some that Brebbia received the call, since many had assumed that once rosters expanded, Atlanta would reassign Daysbel Hernandez to the major league roster.
But this move makes a little more sense when you take into account the postseason roster regulations (a player must be on the 40-man roster by August 31st in order to be eligible for the postseason roster). For this reason, the Braves continued to shuffle their roster in an attempt to assemble the finest postseason team as of yesterday.
The White Sox just released Brebbia a few days ago. His 6.29 ERA and 4.43 FIP in 48.2 innings during the Chicago season weren’t promising. The truth is that everyone in the White Sox camp has had difficulty, and Brebbia had excellent success for the Giants in 2021–2023, pitching for San Francisco with a 3.83 ERA in 134 games.
An extra arm is essential for the Braves right now, regardless of who answered the call. It’s a good development to give players like Jimenez, Johnson, and Iglesias a break because the bullpen has been overworked these past few weeks.
