After an ungainly swing, Bohm leaves the Phillies-Braves series opener.
Due to left hand discomfort, Alec Bohm was taken out of the Phillies’ series opener against the Braves after the second inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, on the second swing of his one and only at-bat against Charlie Morton, Bohm hurt his hand. He yelled when his hands twisted uncomfortably during his swing’s follow-through. Bohm was checked on for a few minutes by Phillies associate athletic trainer Christian Bermudez and manager Rob Thomson, but the third baseman continued to play.
According to Thomson, “it was just kind of a weird finish.” He gave it a little pinch, almost like a zinger. But at the moment, he hurts. Simply put, we’ll evaluate him again tomorrow.”After grounding out on the following pitch, Bohm, looking obviously in discomfort, headed back down the tunnel into the Phillies’ clubhouse. Returning for the top of the second, he made the game’s last play after catching a Luke Williams lineout, and he left before the third inning could begin.
Bohm’s hand X-rays came back negative. Edmundo Sosa took his place.
“Went out and played defense and we were gonna reassess him afterwards and he had trouble swinging the bat,” Thomson stated. Bohm has started 128 games and made appearances in 131 of the Phillies’ 133 games. Along with a major-league-high 44 doubles, 13 home runs, and 89 RBI, he is hitting.290. Despite his struggles with runners in scoring position during the homestand, he is the Phillies’ leading run scorer, thus his loss would be felt keenly.
On Friday afternoon, further information regarding Bohm’s condition should be available, but it wouldn’t be shocking if he sat out Game 2 against right-hander Reynaldo Lopez.
