US Open victor Coco Gauff is faced with an unforeseen crisis: Experts advise her to take a quick mental vacation.
The 20-year-old is still a rising star in the tennis world, but there are high expectations for her because of her apparent potential.
In the end, she was unable to advance past the quarterfinals and departed the games with a heavy heart.
Gauff subsequently focused on the Canadian Open, where she was defeated by a lower-ranked opponent in the first round once more. She then lost her title defense in the Cincinnati Open, which indicates that she has experienced continuous disappointment in a short period of time.
In an interview with Tennis Channel, former player Monica Puig asserted that Gauff must undergo a “mental reset” in order to regain her competitive edge.
“I would love to see her make a mental reset,” she remarked. We are aware of the kind of tennis she can play. She must concentrate on playing the aggressive game style and serving well. However, perhaps set the US Open and previous year’s events aside, start over, and work your way up from there.”
Gauff recently spoke herself about the struggles, saying: “I feel like I have to work on consistency, overall. I’ll probably go home and try to reset.”
Moreover, she also pointed out what led to her below-par performance against her opponent. “I made a lot of errors, especially when I was up 4-2 (in the third set). I think most of the points she won were off my errors.”
