After third baseman Austin Riley was injured, the Atlanta Braves signed Gio Urshela.
August 20, UPI With third baseman Austin Riley sidelined for the remainder of the regular season due to a fractured hand, the Atlanta Braves signed veteran infielder Gio Urshela, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Urshela agreed to a minor league deal. Riley’s right hand injury resulted in his placement on the 10-day disabled list. In order to create space on their 40-man roster, the Braves placed pitcher A.J. Minter on the 60-day disabled list.
Riley is anticipated to miss six to eight weeks, the Braves announced on Monday.
Riley, 27, has played in 110 games this season and is hitting.256 with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs. Between 2021 and 2023, the two-time All-Star hit at least thirty home runs annually.
Through 92 games this season, Urshela, 32, hit.243 for the Detroit Tigers with 37 RBIs and a home run. On Sunday, the veteran infielder was released by the Tigers.
After 756 MLB games, Urshela has a career.273 average and 69 home runs. The Cleveland Guardians, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, and Los Angeles Angels were among the teams he had previously played for.
The Braves (66-58) sit in second place in the National League East, seven games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies (73-51). They currently have the third Wild Card slot in the National League.
They will host the Phillies at 7:20 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Atlanta.
