Before the preseason finale, three Cleveland Browns are on the roster bubble.
It will be interesting to see how these three players do in the final roster cuts.
With the end of the preseason quickly approaching, meaningful football will soon return. There is just one more preseason game for the Cleveland Browns until they take on the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.
Players are competing for a few available positions on the roster, even though the majority of the spots are already taken. The players listed below must perform well for the remainder of the preseason in order to help secure a position on the roster; they are probably on the bubble.
D’Onta Foreman
Nick Chubb’s availability may very well determine D’Onta Foreman’s position on the team. In his first 53-man roster for Week 1, Andrew Berry, the general manager of the Browns, has only carried a maximum of three running backs—not including fullbacks—each year.
Berry may find himself on the outside looking in if he continues on this current trajectory. The team added free agent Nyheim Hines and has Jerome Ford, who filled in rather well last year despite not being the most reliable. Pierre Strong, who the team traded for last year, is not included in this.
Foreman was one of the team’s shining moments in the Minnesota Vikings game, and it was simple to see how he could contribute to the group in the future. Despite facing a terrible offensive line, he managed to make a few good rush attempts and was proficient at collecting passes out of the backfield.
He might force the team to retain him if he can repeat that performance this week. It also doesn’t helped that Foreman was a former favorite of running backs coach Duce Staley’s squad.
Cohen, Javion
It’s Javion Cohen’s best preseason yet. For the first two preseason games, he has been named as a starter. Cohen has been a reliable performer even if the offensive line hasn’t played well overall.
Some have already predicted that Cohen will be able to make the roster for opening week. But there’s no assurance he’ll make the final roster after going undrafted in this year’s NFL Draft.
It’s difficult to predict how many offensive linemen Berry will start with on the starting 53. He has spent two seasons keeping nine and two seasons keeping ten with the team. Naturally, having 10 linemen would help Cohen get on the squad.
The new NFL kickoff structure could be one element affecting Cohen’s chances of making the squad. Berry may alter his entire roster structure in response to Bubba Ventrone’s demands as the coordinator of the special teams.
But Cohen will make it difficult for the Browns to let go of him if he has another excellent practice week and plays well in the game. Keeping him this season could help the Browns later on since he could fill in for Joel Bitonio or Wyatt Teller if they are injured.
Harden, Myles
Another athlete who has had a largely successful training camp is Myles Harden. He’s demonstrated his ability to play the ball and his willingness to take hits. On the Vikings’ 71-yard touchdown pass, Harden was the one in coverage because he was unable to successfully undercut the throw.
Harden has demonstrated potential, and he could grow into a useful nickel. Although the team also has Cam Mitchell, the combination of the two could make it possible for the team to feel confident enough to let go of Greg Newsome soon.
Berry has demonstrated that he like to start with at least 10 defensive backs, with one year having 11 in that position. For Harden, this is good news that improves his chances. But in the offseason, the team also added Tony Brown II, a highly productive special teams player. Berry may be forced to choose between the two players as a result of this.
For the remainder of the preseason, Harden must put forth his best effort to convince the Browns that he can contribute to their special teams and that he is the nickel’s future in order to aid the team. Should things not work out, the team may have to bench him and hope he makes it onto their practice squad.
