The Philadelphia Phillies outfielder was criticized for receiving one of the highest salaries.
One of baseball’s strongest candidates for the World Series going into the closing stretch of the regular season is the Philadelphia Phillies.
Regretfully, they no longer resemble the team they did at the beginning of the season. They had just been on a four-game winning streak, but they were defeated by the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
Although the team’s quality cannot be disputed, there are important questions that need to be addressed in light of their current losing streak.
Having said that, a number of players on the team have not been performing to the best of their abilities. Nick Castellanos, an experienced outfielder, is one of them.
Compared to the start of the season, Castellanos has played a lot better in the last few months. Still, he hasn’t been performing to the caliber that his pay would indicate he ought to be.
Recently, Bleacher Report released a list of baseball players who are the highest paid. Castellanos was singled out by them for being one of those players.
“After a terrible start to the year, Castellanos has at least significantly improved the situation. Not only did he play perpetually bad right field defense, but thirty-five games into the season, his OPS was below.500. His OPS going back to May 6 is marginally above.800. Still, it has taken him a solid three months at the dish to rehone his skills and get back up to replacement-level output.”
That is some frank candor, and it is entirely true.
Castellanos has participated in 124 games this season. While batting, he has amassed 63 RBI and 16 home runs.250/.306/.419 in combination.
Although Castellanos’s numbers aren’t too bad, he is earning $20 million this season. Additionally, the veteran outfielder will receive $20 million in salary each of the next two years.
With any luck, Catellanos and the Phillies will continue to produce at the higher level that he has exhibited at times this season. Throughout the remainder of the season and into the postseason, they will need him to hit at a high level.
Castellanos is worth $20 million when he performs at his peak level. But if Philadelphia hopes to win a title, he needs to find a way to improve on his inconsistent play this season.
