After the Fever defeated the Phoenix Mercury with another double-double, Caitlin Clark stated this.
When the Indiana Fever returned to WNBA action after the Olympic break, Caitlin Clark put on a show. At Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday night, the Fever defeated the Phoenix Mercury 98-89 because to the rookie standout’s 29 points and 10 assists.Playing against a Phoenix squad that included three gold medalists from squad USA (Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and Kahleah Copper), Clark—who was left off the USA Olympic team—shone. Taurasi finished with 16 points on 5 of 13 shots, Copper finished with a game-high 32 points, while Griner struggled with foul trouble, managing only 10 points and four rebounds. At 12-15, the Fever are currently sixth in the WNBA playoff standings (only the top eight advance).Following the victory on Friday night, Clark said the following:
“I believe that even in the simple act of communicating with one another during the game and seeking each other out when we’re hot, we improved significantly. I’m always going to try and find her, and I think she can tell when I want her to go backdoor, when I want her to come off the ball, or anything like that—it’s just that chemistry that you get used to playing with one another. Kels got hot there and made a few in a row, so you’re just looking to find her, especially in transition. Though I believe it has taken some time, I believe we are finally starting to connect.
In the opening quarter, Fever had a 33-16 lead.
Yes, that was enjoyable. We simply need to keep finding a way to maintain the energy we had when we first came out. However, they are a very strong team and will not disappear; the challenge is to discover strategies to contain them. We gave them a run (20–3), then we responded, so they went on another run. I believe we need to minimize their run, and that’s where we should go next. However, I’m extremely proud of us because I felt like there were moments this year when we would kind of fall apart after blowing a big lead. What was our biggest lead?
made a stop, and Lou scored a three. I believe that gave us some momentum heading into the fourth, and we played excellently. It was going to take me some time to get used to, I believe, simply getting to know my teammates and playing with them is just a comfortability. We’ve been getting better and better ever since I kind of discovered my groove, even if it was difficult to adjust at first.
“My experience with that is positive. While it’s something I enjoy doing, it also has to be used to your advantage; it can’t be a distraction or cause you to lose focus. Simply put, let the fans assist you; they are here and supporting us. I think the supporters today were amazing, and they were quite loud. They were engaged in the match, and since you have to win the games at home, they are of great assistance to us.
