The Phillies’ home A star left-hander Ranger Suárez is listed as injured due to lower back pain.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The Philadelphia Phillies placed All-Star left-hander Ranger Suárez on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday due to lower back pain.
After a summer slump, the 28-year-old is 10-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 20 starts. He began the season 9-1 and was selected for his first National League All-Star game. At 119 1/3 innings, he is on pace to surpass his career high of 155 1/3 in 2022 and his 125 innings from the previous year.
Rob Thomson, manager of the Phillies, expressed his expectation that Suárez will make a comeback during the series against Arizona from August 8–11. According to Thomson, Suárez had back tightness when he woke up on Friday, although it wasn’t the same issue that kept him out of the All-Star Game.
Thomson stated, “He thought he could work through it in his bullpen, and he couldn’t.” We’re going to be extremely cautious and give him some rest because he was still tense afterwards.
The IL action was made retroactive to Wednesday by Philadelphia.
After dominating the first three months of the season as the top major league team, the Phillies have entered a summertime slump. They have dropped seven of ten games going into their matchup with Cleveland on Saturday, despite having the best record at 64-39.
Recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley by Philadelphia was left-hander Koby Allard. He will kick off the series finale on Sunday.
Allard pitched in just four games last season for Atlanta. He spent four seasons with Texas and is 9-24 with a 6.10 ERA and one save over parts of six major league seasons with the Braves and Rangers.
The Phillies were already out without a pair of right-handers. Taijuan Walker has been out with finger issues on his right hand and Spencer Turnbull with a right lat strain.
Thomson said he did not expect Walker to return before Suárez is eligible to get activated off the injured list.
“I think over the course of the full season, guys typically need some time off,” Thomson said. “I see this as kind of a silver lining in Ranger’s year. I think he’ll come out of this and he’ll be stronger coming down the stretch.”
