Braves put Max Fried, an All-Star left-hander, on injured reserve.
Atlanta: The Braves announced on Sunday that left-hander Max Fried, an All-Star for the Braves, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with forearm neuritis, or inflammation of the nerve, effective from Thursday. With 18 starts this season, Fried (7-5, 3.08 ERA) has established himself as a vital element of the Braves’ rotation with Chris Sale and Reynaldo Lopez. After just two games, Braves starter Spencer Strider was lost for the season in April.
The manager, Brian Snitker, stated that prior to his debut in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, Fried felt relaxed. Fried allowed one walk while pitching ten pitches in the second inning. When he arrived at the ballpark on Friday, he still felt strange, and an MRI confirmed the neuritis. It won’t happen until he stops having symptoms. Snitker expressed his hope that his time on the IL would only be temporary.
With a strained forearm last year, Fried—who has appeared on the National League All-Star team in two of the previous three seasons—missed three months of action. On July 11, he made his last pitch for the Braves. In six innings, he gave up one run on five hits in a 1-0 loss to the Diamondbacks in Arizona. In his previous start, an 8-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, he allowed a season-high 11 hits. To cover for Fried, the Braves called up lefty Dylan Dodd from Triple-A Gwinnett. In 2023, Dodd made seven starts with the Braves, going 2-2 with a 7.60 ERA. With Gwinnett this season, he is 2-7 with a 4.99 ERA.
